Dickey County Health District recognizes the impact that addictive substances have on the health of our communities. Dickey County Health District is committed to reducing substance abuse and create awareness in our county. We provide many services including health education to schools, businesses, and government agencies, and implement evidence-based prevention strategies to prevent use of all substances.

Alcohol Prevention:

Alcohol is the most commonly used drug among youth in the state of North Dakota. Reducing the occurrence of underage drinking is a top priority in Dickey County.

Naloxone can temporarily reverse the effects of opioid overdose. In an overdose state, it can be a lifesaver.

What is Naloxone?

Naloxone is a prescription medication that temporarily reverses an opioid overdose. Sold under the brand names Narcan® or Evzio®, the medication can be given by intranasal spray or auto-injector.

Is Naloxone Safe?

Naloxone has no potential for abuse or addiction. It is safe, effective, and approved by the FDA. However, this lifesaving action is temporary — overdose always requires immediate medical attention.

How Does It Work?

Naloxone is an antidote to overdose of heroin or other opioid drugs, working within a few minutes of administration. It works by blocking the effects of opioids in a person's system, helping to restore breathing. Naloxone has no effect on a person who has not used heroin or opioids and does not work with other drugs.
